As another gal who grew up within walking distance of O'Hare, I take offense. There are plenty of real Americans in Chicago.
By the way, about the "Chitcago" remark. It is a great city with a lot of great things going on, great history, lots of talented people and comedians from there, restaurants, museums, ballet, theater, anything to rival anything anywhere on the world stage. Wonder if you could say the same about your corner of the world.
However, I love the rural areas and the mountains and I have traveled pretty much all over the U.S. except for the far NW. I think they are all great and have something different and beautiful and unique to offer.
People from Chicago or any other big city are as American as anyone else. I don't know even what you mean by that, where you grew up or where you're from, but just because you may have a different viewpoint from her doesn't mean this person is not a "real American."

Maybe you're not feeling well; I have had a pretty bad day, too. But I am really sure that no one is trashing the entire generation of youth. I don't think Chigogal was or anyone else. Perhaps with this post I am out of line; I apologize if so. I think perhaps there was a miscommunication. I don't think anyone, anywhere meant any blanket statements. And with that, I'm going to get to bed. It has been a really difficult day for me, NorthMountain, and maybe I shouldn't even post this. I just felt you were lashing out at a person you've probably never met, for no reason. Take care.
