In the digital world it doesn't matter who controls Call Detail Records, the Telecommunications corporations or our government. The records can be accessed at a moment's notice in either case. I worked for Verizon Business (MCI) for 31 years. Before that I had a TS clearance and the crypto gear that I worked with was stamped in big letters "Property of NSA."

This little tempest-in-a-teapot is quite moot. The "powers that be" will do what they wish with or without our knowledge. What everyone is missing here is by long standing policy, they won't tell us or seek our approval for anything concerning National Security. In this I trust Trump to control intrusive information better than most.
