They blew all those threats off, they were just threats against what they consider to be just another of the “peons” (they see Palin as a peon who rose above her level, and they only tolerate democracy as long as they can rig it in their favor.) And the media figures making the threats were of “their own”, fellow “important people”, so it was all just yuks when they did it.

You pretty much covered it. I don't really see the point in them going all victim over some idiotic post by some anonymous internet nut. Millions of such posts are made on thousands of sites every day. That's what you get for anonymity. No one loses any sleep over that.
