Ecuador declares state of emergency over Cotopaxi volcano activity(glowbull doomage)

Two minor explosions on Friday at Cotopaxi, located about 70 kilometres south of the capital of Quito, led to a precautionary evacuation of small towns in the centre of country.

"We declare a state of emergency due to the unusual activity of Mount Cotopaxi," Correa said during his weekly Saturday address. "God willing, everything will go well and the volcano will not erupt."

wow. Could you pass this along to our friend who was supposed to be in Ecuador right now. Premonition or coincidence, it may be a good thing that he won’t be there until February now.

Cotopaxi is the most beautiful of all the Ecuador volcanoes IMO.

Beautiful mountain. The photo also shows very strong grounds for concern by those living in Cotopaxi’s shadow. A major eruption would send enormous lahars down the valleys in addition to pyroclastic flows speeding down the steep sides of the mountain and into the surrounding countryside.
