GLENDALE, Ariz. - Arizona Cardinals assistant Jen Welter has become the first woman to coach an NFL game, the same night the league's first full-time female on-field official made her preseason debut.
Welter worked Saturday night's game against the Kansas City Chiefs as an inside linebackers coach, while Sarah Thomas served as the line judge in the seven-person officiating crew.

Why?
My question is why would they do that—or even be allowed to do that?
If they can do the job—Fine.
If they can’t—Get rid of them.
Theory: don’t notice I’m a female just let me do my job.
Practice: notice I’m a woman as you ignore my male colleagues.
My question is why does anyone care?
If women can’t play football, at least they can put them in positions of authority on the field.
Gaydar ringing out loud!
I’m sure the hyper-muscular alpha males will love a chick telling them what to do...
So you think that all the male officials played football at some time?
Yeah. I was not talking about the competency of the women. In fact, the female official can’t be any worse than half the male line judges. (The female coach is a little silly, as a middle linebacker coach, but that’s neither here nor there.)
I just get a kick out of the story, as if it was not a marketing gimmick. After the whole Ray Rice ordeal last year and the war on women in the NFL.
I’m saying it’s all symbolism.
Just like the first gay football player.
I watched the game. I never noticed the female official until the camera did a closeup. She appeared to do a solid job as line judge. As long as she officiates well I do not have an issue with her being in stripes.
If the league makes too big of a deal about it they may build up resentment, though.
All symbolism because it's impossible for a woman to be qualified to officiate in the NFL or coach?
Last year it was about gays in the NFL. This year it must be about women. My guess is next year will be about trannys in the NFL.
This is the way it should be in every game, no matter the sex of the person with the whistle/flag.
AP, the only thing that really matters is WHO WON and by HOW MUCH, what was the score? nothing else really matters.
Yup. It’s like a man trying to teach women how to breastfeed their children.
Well then we should ask why there are no women NFLnplayers? Why no women in baseball? Why no women on the NBA? Why is there a separate women’s basketball league? Why do schools and colleges have sex segregated sports and how is that permitted in this liberal age we live in now???
