Russia, a veto-wielding permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, has pledged to block any future attempts by the UN to hit Iran with fresh sanctions.
"When Resolution 1929, the last series of sanctions resolutions, was adopted we made it clear behind closed doors to our US and EU colleagues that Russia will not let another sanctions resolution against Iran be passed," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told reporters on Friday.
Resolution 1929 was approved by the Security Council in June 2010, banning the supply of conventional weapons to Iran. It resulted in the suspension of Russias contract with Iran on the delivery of Russian S-300 missile defense systems to the Islamic Republic.
Ryabkov also said Moscow expects that anti-Iran sanctions will be lifted as soon as possible following the recent conclusion of nuclear talks between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries.
Iran and the P5+1 -- the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia plus Germany -- reached an agreement, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in the Austrian capital Vienna on July 14.
Under the JCPOA, limits will be put on Irans nuclear activities in exchange for, among other things, the removal of all economic and financial bans against Tehran.
Ryabkov also noted that a decision to deliver the S-300 systems to Iran has been made, and "technicalities" of the process are under consideration.
"Concerning S-300, a decision permitting the delivery of such systems to Iran has been made by the Russian president and the Federation Council, and technicalities of this process are now being considered," he said.
On April 13, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a presidential decree paving the way for the long-overdue delivery of the missile defense system to Iran.
The decision to deliver the missile systems came after Iran and the P5+1 group reached a mutual understanding on Tehrans nuclear program in the Swiss city of Lausanne on April 2.
Vladimir Kozhin, Putins aide on military and technical cooperation, said on July 30 that the S-300 systems are to be modernized before being delivered to Iran, given the fact the original contract was struck in 2007.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Ryabkov said Moscow is satisfied with the terms of the JCPOA.
"I am prepared to explain and give reasons in favor of why we are so confident about it," he noted.
The most effective forms of sanctions are banking restrictions and embargoes.
Russia has near zero influence in international banking. And because international banking finances trade, the control of banks will take care of embargoes as well.
In other words, screw the UN as long as control of banks is maintained.
Golly, who could have predicted that?
Obama was right about one thing. Impossible to stop Iran short of war now. Obama has made sure of that.
Under the Obama agreement, we are supplying Iran with the money to buy those Russian missiles.
The funds Obama is freeing up to the Iranians were frozen due to Iran's pursuit of International terrorism in general and is not tied directly to nuclear weapons.
Iran has openly stated that the Obama deal will have no effect on Iran's pursuit of international terrorism, but will in fact expand and accelerate Iran's terror war on the west.
Both Obama and Kerry have admitted that Iran's increased support of international terror will be a byproduct of the Iran deal.
The way this disaster is playing out is simply surreal, and the way Congress is rolling over can only be described as feckless and treasonous
The stunt Hillary’s minions pulled in Ukraine was more than enough to insure that we won’t be getting Russian cooperation on anything anytime soon.
Yeah, I see war in the future but it may be possible to avoid it.
But here’s the reality. If Iran is allowed to sign onto the money transfer document with bank account information, the money has to be in a ‘form’ that their partners want to deal with such as Euros, US Dollars, Gold, etc. So there will be an exchange project. Secondly, the banks that are moving the money are subject to sanctions if ordered to freeze and the UN/Russia can’t do a damn thing about it.
So it’s not 100% that war will come, but it is certainly closer to war.
If Iran gets substantial access to money, they will be able to buy nukes right away and then continue to develop their own nuke manufacturing and ballistic missile tech.
Everything hinges on control of the money. Fortunately, the only banks that are capable and trustworthy are those under western control. Iran will try just as they have for years to launder money but bankers can easily identify sources and origination of money. Black market laundering is extremely difficult because the players are notoriously dishonest. For example, Russian and Chinese banks are not to be trusted at all. Hong Kong Banks are still monitored by the HKMA which is still observing western legal standards. I don’t believe the Chinese would be interested in selling nukes to Iran unless they obtained enormous concessions in oil.
Anyway, the point is the release and control of hundreds of billions of dollars or even a billion dollars is not easy, not like going up to ATM machines and making withdrawals.
Wow, who could have seen that coming. Not The Doofus.
AND what’s to snap back anyway? Iran will have immediate use of the money and world wide corporations will flood Tehran seconds after sanctions are lifted. Is Obama going to kick them out and take the money back???
HAHAHA. Who do you think China will sell their tons and tons of gold to once sanctions are gone? Obama gonna stop that one too?
It'll be helpful to Russia to veto sanctions on the sale of Iranian petroleum-- uh, wait a second, no it won't. Ah! But it will beneficial when Iran's oil production begins to rise into an already glutted market, and-- uh, wait, I know the answer to this....
If youd like to be on or off, please FR mail me.
