At first discipline. (He was following not leading also suggested) .Later it appears his friends were there and he chose to stay.
One article suggested that his mother Mary recognized his low self esteem and with Norman Vincent Peale influence of positive thinking created the boastful attitude

That just goes along with anything Trump does...once he gets his focus he doesn't let go. At least that's how I see him....although he did say that you sometimes have to let go and move onto something else if it's not proving productive....and that requires discipline to dis-engage.

Interesting Trump conversation here:

Trump........”With me, I had yesterday a lobbyist call me up — it’s a friend of mine, good guy, smart as hell,” he said. “He said, ‘Donald I want to put $5 million into your campaign. I said, ‘I don’t need it. I don’t want it.”

“’Because when you come back to me in two years and you want help with a company you’re representing — or a country that you’re representing — I’m going to do the right thing for the people of the United States and I don’t want to have to insult you’,” he added.

“Since the Bush years, I haven’t been interested in putting anyone in power,” Iowa resident Joe McNeley, a former Democrat, said of his support for the billionaire business leader.... “Mr. Trump — he’s not in the political realm. He speaks his mind and he’s not afraid.”
