I’ve been in Tianjin.

They have a large coal gasification plant there, with an enormous gasholder. That’s a huge metal container, perhaps 75-100 meters high and nearly as large in diameter.

They are used to store gas and regulate its pressure as it is sent through pipelines to users.

That is perhaps what exploded.
