Trump simply doesn't understand the issues because he is a not an ideological conservative that has really debated and thought about these things.
The last point, I think sadly is true. The cult of personality that is Donald Trump is allowing him to take liberal position such as (now he's criticizing Bush of all people for not spending enough Federal dollars on "womens health care"), saying that single payer socialized health care in Canada works great, that in Scotland it works really terrific, etc, etc, and getting away with it because people are "angry".
So people are angry and their answer is to support an anti-intellectual populist? That is more or less where we are at.
This Trump thing isn't going to end well. It's really not. The guy will not be the nominee, but there may just be enough butthurt Trumpsters willing to sit out or write in his name to help the Democrats keep the White House. We've seen this nonsense before with Perot gifting Clinton the White House with only 43% of the vote.
Perot lost. Plus, Perot wasn’t taking on the Uniparty. And finally, we can vet the issues so much better than in 1992 on this thing called the internet.
