DEABORN, MI -- Robert Snell of the Detroit News analyzed flight data that shows a single-engine, 2010 Cessna tied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation by an Associated Press investigation this June spent a good amount of time in the skies above the Muslim-concentrated city of Dearborn this weekend.
The flight data showed the plane on Saturday and Sunday made 19 slow-speed, several-mile-wide loops above Dearborn, as well as neighboring cities of Allen Park, Melvindale, Dearborn Heights and Taylor.
"The FBI is operating a small air force with scores of low-flying planes across the country carrying video and, at times, cellphone surveillance technology — all hidden behind fictitious companies that are fronts for the government ... " The Associated Press reported in June.
The AP identified 100 flights in 11 states over a 30-day period this spring connected to FBI surveillance.
It's unclear if the weekend flights over Dearborn and neighboring cities were routine or in response to a threat.
The FBI denied it conducted targeted spy missions at all.
"Contrary to the suggestion of some recent media reporting, the FBI does not employ aviation assets to conduct mass surveillance nor to target specific communities," FBI Director of the Detroit Field Office Paul M. Abbate said in a statement Wednesday. "Neither does the FBI monitor lawfully protected First Amendment activity.
"Further, the FBI Detroit Field Office is not aware of any specific or credible threats within the local Detroit Metropolitan area."
The U.S. Attorney's Office in Detroit and the FBI declined to give comment to the Detroit News.
Deaborn, a city of nearly 100,000, has a large Muslim population with over 40 percent of its residents claiming Arab ancestry in the 2010 U.S. Census.
The AP investigation found FBI program planes tied to at least 13 fake companies and said "even basic aspects" of the program are being withheld from the public.
Snell reports the plane tracked this weekend by the Detroit News is registered to OTV Leasing of Bristow, Virgina, listing a post office box in Bristow as its address.
