Vincent Marotta, the mastermind behind the Mr. Coffee home coffeemaker machine, has died at age 91.
The son of Italian immigrants, Marotta can be credited with changing the way Americans consume caffeine, conceiving of the automatic drip coffee maker in 1968, decades before Starbucks SBUX +0.72% starting cropping up on city corners.

And this just in:
Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead.
He lived to see Keurig take his invention to a whole new level.
My parents started their “Mr. Coffee” when they got up in the morning and kept it going until the evening.
RIP
I was almost Mr. Coffee. They felt I was a little too relaxed.
The Mr. Coffee machine made it possible to grind coffee to a finer ground, which really brought out the taste of the coffee and you didn't have to deal with grinds in the coffee liquid. Sure, there were drip coffee machines before Mr. Coffee, but they were expensive, institutional quality Bunn machines used by coffee shops.
Yep. I still have my Mr. Coffee packed away, but since Mrs. Hugin and I rarely drink more than one cup per day and we got tired of throwing half a pot away, we switched to Keurig.
Link please??
Husband & I are old. He’s never been a coffee drinker. I liked Mr. Coffee; but got rid of mine very recently. It got stained & messy, required a lot of cleanup. So, I, being a Twinkie, gave up & am now buying organic instant coffee. Just drink a cup a day; so it’s okay. - I used to grind my own coffee in a manual grinder; then son got me an electric grinder, which I used for a long time. - Now, I’ve given up & it is sad. :o( (McDonald’s coffee is a real treat once in a while. Starbucks once every 3 or 4 yrs.)
I run the coffee ministry at our church using 100-cup percolators and Kirkland (Costco) drip-grind coffee. We routinely go through 300 cups of regular and 50+ cups of decaf. I receive compliments every Sunday from people who tell me ours is the best tasting coffee they've ever had. Some say the only coffee they drink throughout the week ours on Sundays.
Percolated coffee is only bitter if you put in too much grounds. The rule of thumb is 1 scoop (~1/8 cup) of coffee grounds to 3 cups of water. More than that and the coffee will be bitter.
We line the bottom of the basket with a drip gring paper coffee filter to keep the grounds out of the coffee.
You also have to take the basket out of the coffee as soon as it's finished brewing otherwise, it'll keep getting stronger.
It's possible to make drip coffee bitter by using too much coffee. I use the same recipe (1 scoop coffee - 3 cups of water) in the Bunn machines at church and in my Mr. Coffee machine at home and the coffee tastes great.
The real secret to good tasting coffee isn't the brand of coffee or the method of brewing, but in the coffee to water ratio.
RIP.
Thank you. It must be true then, since it’s on the internet.
Yes, but it was SNL that initially broke the story
