TWO B-52 bombers flew 44 hours non-stop from Louisiana to the Northern Territory on a simulated bombing run last month all to deliver a message to China.
The lumbering, 1950s vintage dinosaurs lifted off from the Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, United States, on July 1.
Their mission: to be BAAD.
Thats military speak for yet more military speak: bomber assurance and deterrence.
Translated, it means sending a message to Australia and the nations of South East Asia that the United States is willing and capable of assisting its allies.
It was also a demonstration to China of the US militarys continued global reach amid soaring tensions in the South China Sea over that nations island-base building campaign on disputed territory.
These flights are one of the many ways the US demonstrates its commitment to a stable and peaceful Indo-Asia Pacific region, US Navy Admiral Cecil D Haney said in a statement.
The simulated attack run which saw the Delamere weapons testing range in the Northern Territory plastered with inert dummy bombs was initially given a low public profile.
Most attention at the time was directed towards the military exercise Talisman Sabre, a joint US/Australian war game aimed at practising mid intensity, high end combat including special forces, amphibious landings, parachute attacks, sea and air combat and urban occupation.

Boom goes London boom Paree more room for you and more room for me...
And every city the whole world round will just be another American town.
Longer. This is a 60+ year old weapons system
Australia can wait. First bomb Canada.
Here's one towing an aircraft carrier.
I knew we had that technology, I just knew it. I’m vindicated at last.
We'll save Australia...don't wanna hurt no kangaroo
"Political Science" by Randy Newman
B-52’s don’t make attack runs over targets any more. As you pointed out they couldn’t survive...
They have stand off weapons, ALCM and SRAM, that can hit targets hundred of miles away.
This is not your Father’s B-52. The old dog has new tricks up its sleeve.
The mission of a B-52 is basically a flying dump truck. Boing did such a good job it is difficult to design a flying dump truck that will do it better.
As a nuclear bomber, it is far outclassed by an F-16, F-18, F-15E, F-35 etc. The B-61 nuke is a dial a yield, up to 340 KT yield. We don't have the 26000 pound, 15 megaton bombs anymore. That was the design payload of the B-52
But the Buff is still the one to beat if the mission calls for 60000 pounds of dumb iron bombs scattered across a large area.
I flew B-52s, 25 years ago, and never flew a bird younger than I was. . .Even the NEWEST B-52s were delivered in FY 63.
I know of at LEAST one family that has had 4 generations flying B-52s. . .
Post of the day.
Welcome to DREAMLAND.Great book
How true. Exceptionally good comment.
Been better if the proved their usefulness by sending a couple squadrons to DC, Baltimore, NYC, LA, SF etc.
That is so awesome. I used to fly its older brother 25 years ago. Our missions were for fun though taking veterans for flights. I’m sure yours were a little bit more serious.
Try a real bombing run on Iran and stop ww3 from starting.
