Uneven Performances in Trump-less Republican Forum
The New York Times ^ | AUG. 3, 2015 | JEREMY W. PETERS and MICHAEL BARBARO

Posted on 08/03/2015 10:00:52 PM PDT by conservative98

Jeb Bush stumbled through a familiar question about his brother and father, struggling for the right words as he cracked a joke about duking it out with anyone who questioned the legacy of his aging dad.

Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey awkwardly said aloud what many have been wondering about his candidacy: “Am I washed up?”

And Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina reached back to the 1990s to attack Hillary Rodham Clinton’s credibility by dredging up her husband’s dishonesty about a sexual affair.

Mischievously promising to translate “Clinton-speak” for the audience, Mr. Graham explained, “When Bill says, ‘I didn’t have sex with that woman,’ he did.”

After weeks of preparing for a smash-mouth debate with Donald J. Trump, 14 Republican candidates found themselves instead Trump-less but sandwiched into a constricting format on Monday night, delivering strikingly uneven performances just days before the first big test of the presidential primary contest.

Rather than making the other contenders look more presidential, however, the event, at St. Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., seemed to shrink the candidates.

What a joke most of these candidates are. I'm glad I missed this. Trump was smart to miss this, too. Glad Cruz stayed in Washington and only appeared on video.

I watched from a pizza restaurant and missed some but I thought Jindal was pretty good, Cruz did well too but the rest was an absolute joke. Hearing Linday Graham talk mean and touch had me in laughter/.

Trumpless... I like the sound of it.

It was a Trumpless debate, not worthy of serious attention.

:-)

I suffered through it while lying down on my couch with a headache.

Thankfully, it was a snooze-fest, but I thought Carly and Jindal were good and didn’t Lindsey Graham break into tears?

I watched 15 minutes of it, starting with Carson. After 5 minutes with Juan Bush I turned it off. Trump was wise to skip this farce. He is going to clobber these career parasites (Cruz excluded)

Cruz was very good. The fact that the NYT did not pan him. Is an indication of that.
Many were embarrassing. Perry seems to have been advised to
Frequently say “smart” and hope the voters would impart that
Quality to him. Jindal seemed uncomfortable to me, but I have not heard him speak often. Bush had some good points, but I don’t remember what they were. He has a very weak communication style. Pataki should have stayed home. Fiorina speaks well and makes good points, but she is not presidential material.

"Trumpless... I like the sound of it."

I think of it more as a bizarre "alternate universe" debate, without the 26% elephant in the room. No one can claim they didn't have a shot at the mic.

It’s too bad because Perry was a good Texas governor but he is simply not presidential material.

Why do you say Carly isn’t presidential material? Not that I think she will get the nomination but so far I like what she says and she seems very intelligent.

That seems to be true of many of the governors running. I really and truly think that most of their terms are up, and they need another job, so, they run for president. It gets them on talk shows, etc., as “former presidential candidate.” They want to keep eating at the taxpayer trough. Some even double dip - (Perry) He was drawing his pension as well as getting his salary as governor. Christie is washed up as far as I’m concerned. He has made a mess out of NJ - well, maybe he improved it somewhat, but, it’s still a mess. I’ll almost lay odds that the next governor will once again be a Demoncrat. They can’t help themselves. I think Jindal’s term is up as well as Walker. Kasich is still in office until 2018. His Lt. Gov. is a very capable woman, however. (I’m a Buckeye - so don’t throw stones). Some are so far removed from governorships that they seem to miss the paycheck - Bush, Pataki, Gilmore, and Huckabee. Three Senators, and a has-been Senator - Santorum. Two business people and a Neuro Surgeon. everyone of them believes he/she is the most qualified to be president, when in reality, it’s mostly a snooze fest. I don’t think Trump really missed anything.

This just proves a very simple point.

If Trump wasn’t Running, THIS is what the American People would be seeing and they would turn towards Hillary for inspiration. Of that I have no doubt.

Were any of those Candidates inspirational tonight? Did they do anything that would get somebody watching jump to their feet in agreement with their passion and vision?

I think Cruz is inspirational, but I am not the average Apolitical person. They have been propagandized to see Cruz as that mean Guy that shut down Uncle Sugar for a few days just to damage poor President Obama.

Truth means nothing. The Apolitical types don’t have the time and inclination to dig for facts when the Headlines and Liberal Narrative are being spoon fed to them 24/7.

The Media would yawn and Hillary would be a constant presence in the 24/7 News Cycle with every Report being more breathless in Praising her as being a Gift for America.

For all the Trump Butt Hurt going on around here, even his harshest Critics have to admit that he changed the entire tiresome Election Cycle and many people outside of us Political Animals are finally waking up. We all know some of those people.

Trump did that, not one of his Republican Competitors.
