To correct the problem, a few things are required.

1) Get government out of healthcare entirely. Care for the indigent poor may be paid in block grants to the states, but how the states choose to spend this money is up to them. If states choose to not provide healthcare for indigent illegal aliens.

2) Limit insurance to just serious medical, long term care and catastrophic insurance. Not routine medical care insurance. If people want routine medical care, they may choose to go to a subscription HMO, or to get concierge medicine. Most young people in good health will likely choose ala carte and urgent medical care.

3) Completely privatize HIPAA and HITECH. The medical records of private individuals are *not* for government storage, maintenance, or review. This also involves the resurrection of the “doctor-patient privilege”, so that medical and dental records can only be obtained by a court order.

You and the article have it half right. Obamacare and the changes it forced and/or accelerated in how doctors are compensated has accelerated the departure of experienced doctors from the profession. There is a second part to the upcoming lack of doctors, in the 1980s med schools reduced the number of students they were training for reasons that made sense at that time. Unfortunately there are a significant percentage of doctors who will turn 65 in the next ten years, and expanding med schools to train their replacements will take at least 2 years and more likely 6 to see the increased number of graduates without severely compromising quality.

Disagree with #2: Let the insurance companies offer what they want to offer, and let the consumers choose what they want to buy. You know, that free market thing...
