As penetration of social media plays an increasingly important role in presidential politics, I thought it might be useful to point out where the currently announced candidates stand with regard to Twitter followers.
Now some caveats here. Some politicians have been known to boost the number of their followers with bogus accounts. For instance, Shrillary Clinton is the biggest offender with over one third of her followers confirmed as bogus.
On the other hand, other candidates like Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders have the highest percentage of legitimate followers.
For these rankings, I have separated the candidates by political party and also included a column for the Twitter handles I am pulling the numbers from. That way, if I am not using the proper Twitter handle, please feel free to point that out to me and I will change it for future updates.
I plan to post updates on a regular basis and may expand this to include Facebook, but for now, I'm sticking with Twitter only.
First the Republicans
Now for the Democrats...

Well he does have a star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame- - “for just being himself “
I just thank God that I don’t have, and don’t think I need one of these stupid accounts
Note that Donald Trump has almost accumulated as many followers as Shrillary Clinton in a short time and almost all of them are REAL.
Donald Trump has spent years on Twitter most of the tweets are from him personally. Unlike most famous people, Trump is well known to respond to or retweet tweets from the average Joe (like you and me). This often happens when the person is complimenting Trump. There are also times when he will attack an average Joe when that average Joe personally attacts him. But most of his replies are to those “average Joes” who shine a good light on him.
While you can know that most tweets coming from Hillary Clinton’s account or that of Jeb Bush and most of the others are actually done by their interns or social media staff, most of Donald Trumps are from him personally.
Love him or hate him, agree with him or not the man has spent the last 5 plus years on Twitter mingling with the average American along with those famous ones who rarely acknowledge our existence (not that I would care anyways).

True! You give him a big compliment and he will reply to your tweet publically and probably retweet it. He's not one who just does it to other famous people. His tweets are from him personally.
He had two facebooks accounts also. Ted Cruze with 1.3 million likes and Sen. Ted Cruze with 800K likes.
Trump just tweeted that he is dominating social media and then put up a Twitter graph. I’m hoping he got the idea from this thread here.
By comparison, ¿Jeb added only 3,500.
