About the Fancy Farm Picnic
Every year since the early 1880s, St. Jerome Catholic Church in the small town of Fancy Farm, near Mayfield in Graves County, has hosted an annual community picnic. At some point, political candidates began to see the Fancy Farm Picnic as a good chance to meet, greet, and stump for votes. Soon a platform for speaking was added, and by the middle of the 20th century, Fancy Farm had become the unofficial kickoff event for the fall campaigns.
These days at Fancy Farm, picnic volunteers serve up tons of barbecue (pork and the regional favorite, mutton) while crowds gather at the speakers platform to cheeror jeertheir chosen candidates.

Pure political theater
Alright, emcee, you aren’t the focus of attention - move on to the speakers, please.
Bevin and McConnell sitting very near one another.
State Senator Humphries takes joke at emcee for talking so long before allowing the speakers to begin.
Ed Whitfield speaks.
Senator McConnell now up.
Mostly silence on the Dem side vs. the normal loud boos when McConnell said they would defund Planned Parenthood...even a few people were clapping on their side.
Oh goody...Beshear now up. Mute.
Matt Bevin and Jack Conway do coin flip - Matt Bevin wins the toss, chooses to speak after Conway.
Matt Bevin now up.
Looks like the GOP side may be larger than the Democrats even with all of the bussed in union types.
Matt Bevin is doing excellent.
Sannie Overly, Dem candidate for Lt. Governor, who stated repeatedly that Matt Bevin said he would eliminate childhood education - a completely false statement - Bevin never said this - now attacking Matt Bevin as dishonest.
Jeneann Hampton, Republican Lt. Governor candidate, now up. Introduced as “historic moment” “first woman of color ever to speak at Fancy Farm.”
Excellent speech by Hampton - quite a contrast to the nasty, arrogant speech of her opponent.
Downticket candidates now speaking.
Dem ag commissioner candidate attacking her opponent for having grey hair when he is only in his 30s. That’s pretty stupid.
Ryan Quarles gives good speech for ag commissioner...slightly nervous but did fine.
Dem candidate Andy Beshear says Whitney Westerfield not qualified because, in part, he once got a pedicure.
Oh, lovely, here’s Alison Lundergan Grimes - who will hopefully be removed from office. Attacking Bevin and his running mate, Jeneann Hampton, as not qualified because they were originally from another state.
