It makes me sick. It grieves my spirit. I had once thought that, at least emotionally, instinct would prevent this sort of brutal action.

I was quite wrong. Instinct loses in any contest with a sociopathic, self-serving personality. Infanticide destroys the child; it also destroys the mother's soul.
