About 40 years ago, I was wearing soft rubber sole slip-on shoes and didn’t lift my foot off the top landing of an escalator in Guam. It grabbed my shoe and sucked it right in. I was able to yank my foot out of the shoe. Scared the daylights out of me. It happened so fast there was no time to think.

The poor woman. Gives me the creeps just thinking about it.

“It grabbed my shoe and sucked it right in.”

I remember a news story about something just like that happening to a little boy at Macy’s in NYC. It must have been a slow news Saturday or something because it made all the media. I think the kid was basically OK, but it was a close call.

And I also remember when those Crocs shoes first came out, there was some discussion that they weren’t good on escalators.

I pay attention to escalator stories, I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who is scared of them.
