Additionally, you can see the way the planes were spotted in this sketch from the October, 1967 edition of U.S. Naval Aviation News, available at http://www.history.navy.mil/research/histories/naval-aviation-history/naval-aviation-news/back-issues/1960.html, which shows that it would have been impossible for a "wet start" from McCain's plane, A4E-416 to "cook off" a rocket from any of the F4's, which were located on the starboard side of the deck.
