"Frankly, illegal immigrants get treated better than many of our vets - it's a disgrace what's happening in this country. And John McCain has done nothing about it but talk," Trump said.
Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump appeared on NBC's "Today" show on Monday morning, saying that illegal immigrants get treated better than many U.S. veterans and repeatedly accusing the hosts of taking his remarks about Sen. John McCain's military service out of context.
Trump called the Department of Veterans Affairs a "scandalous, corrupt organization" and said the media "has done a false number, as usual," reported The Washington Times.
Over the weekend, Trump said that McCain, a Vietnam vet who was captured, tortured and imprisoned for five years, is "not a war hero." Trump went on to say that McCain is considered "a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren't captured."
On the "Today" show, host Matt Lauer read Trump's quote to him and asked if he would repeat it to McCain's face.
"Excuse me, Matt," Trump said. "You're the media and you do the same thing. The next sentence was, 'He is a war hero.' I said that...

Trump is on a streak.
The idiots in the media (95% of FOX included) think Trump has to follow the same template of talk-apologize-fade away they’ve used in the past on everyone else (think “Macacca” George Allen). He doesn’t, it’s as simple as that.
Good point. I would believe that DT would make a mistake by making a gaffe. But not repeatedly. Let’s see if the pattern holds:
Step one: make a borderline outrageous or insulting remark. Not so out there that it can’t be explained or walked back a bit.
Step two: wait for media and establishment to take the bait.
Step three: once bait is taken and false outrage is at it’s crescendo, loudly make underlying point that was intended all along. One where there is broad political consensus. E.g illegal aliens causing problems, vets being treated like dirt.
Step four: walk the talk by bringing the folks who are suffering as a result into the fold.
Repeat.
Lincoln comback on Grant and all Grants flaws “ This man fights”
Trump has a lot of flaws... but he fights back
Even if he is stalking horse, Trump is dragging the campaign focus in the right direction early on...
He killing the GOP establishment campaign to get everyone to get on board the pro Illegal's train or get pushed out of the party.... Trumps taping the pissed off GOP base and Blue collar Dems on illegals....it a big chunk of votes for the GOP-EMAIL to blow off later
It is refreshing. Trump has no problem counterpunching. Most politicians don't. The media isn't used to it. The public is enthralled by it.
I recall nitwit Chris Matthews admiringly saying that George Bush wanted it (the Presidency) more than Gore did. Amazingly, he was right. Right now, Trump is the scrapper.
Trump should have stuck his finger in Lauer’s face and said,” YOU don’t care about veterans’ conditions. If you did, you wouldn’t be covering for McCain’s record of putting illegals over vets!” Make it personal.
Good point.
McCain is not running for President. Why doesn’t Trump go after Jeb?????? He is wasting his time going after McCain who is not even a candidate.
JBush is a wonk and an unknown. McCain is a guilty as Obama and a good stand in for JBush.
Naps...Trump HAS hit ¡Jeb! harder than ANYONE has.
Don’t forget, McDtain started this little ruckus.
this reminds me of 1776 when the british were complaining the colonials were fight guerilla wars instead of lining up in formation and shooting line to line.
The effete media want their kabuki theater back.
I know McCain started it and Trump got his hit in so now he should ignore McCain and concentrate on the 16 others running.
Brahhaaahaaahaaaaa.....so true!
Trump has come up with another great point.
Were you asleep last week? McCain called all the people at Trump’s rally in Phoenix “crazies.” How many of those were veterans, I wonder?
