The sentence immediately before that was “He’s not a war hero.”

Correct. In other words, his act of heroism was enduring torture and imprisonment. While that was awful, don’t we usually consider acts to be heroic when the person has a choice, and chooses the course that puts a greater good or the welfare of another over that of ones self.

If a person is falsely imprisoned for a crime they did not commit, we don’t call them a hero.

But McCain IS a hero because he was given the chance to be freed as the son of an admiral (for NVN propaganda purposes) and he refused to be released. THAT was heroic in anybody's book, even if he is an a** for name calling patriots as Hobbits and crazies.
