The Navy had three major carrier fires in a matter of months from each other. That lead to changes in all shipboard fire fighting especially carriers. Carriers had HI-CAPS installed. Basically a sprinkler system installed on the flight deck and hanger deck with about a dozen tanks that would in an instant at the flip of a switch foam the area.
Mistakes were made on the Forestall during the fire. The instructors at fire fighting school point them out to classes so everybody learns from it.
That in no way diminishes the heroism and sacrifices the crew made trying to save the ship. It was due mainly to inability to communicate and coordinate with the ones fighting the fire.
