Police are searching for a cobra that is believed to have bitten an 18-year-old man who died Tuesday evening.
Police believe Grant Thompson, 18, owned a monocled cobra and that it bit him in his car while at the parking lot of a Lowes at 13000 North Interstate 35. Thompson died after going into cardiac arrest, medics have said.
Police said it is possible that the snake is still in the area and are asking anyone with information about the animal to call police at 512-974-5210. Police described the cobra as black with a distinctive circle on its back and a tan underbelly.
Police urged people not to approach the snake, which is considered highly aggressive, and call 911 immediately if they spot it.
According to social media posts and a Temple Daily Telegram article from March, Thompson was a passionate animal lover who worked at Fish Bowl Pet Express in Temple and would show exotic animals to children as part of his job. His mother had taken him to Fish Bowl Pet Express since he was a baby and, after she bought the business in 2013, Thompson volunteered to work there before becoming a staff member, posts on Facebook said.

Dude’s service cobra turned against him!?
That’s preposterous!
Did they stick their head down under the dash to make sure?
“I doubt they find this one, either.”
Temperature, food and safety.
But you’re right. Austin is too big of a place to find one snake.
Awesome!
Almost everyone knows that you should never play with your snake while sitting in your car at a Lowes parking lot,
But snake handlers are ignorant hillbillies.
Good gi joe reference.
I’d put off any home improvement projects if I lived there. I’ve seen cobras in the wild and they are shy but very hard yo see near rice pads or in the forest. People working in rice paddies are of two minds about them, they are scared but the snakes keep the rat population down.
Well, the performers who do that trick are using snakes that have had their fangs pulled out or have had other things done to make sure they cannot bite.

You obviously didn’t click on the link.
easy, just get a mongoose
My cobra loves riding in the car. He sits right up on the seat and sticks his head out the window..
it strikes me as seriously dumb that we don’t have laws preventing the importation of animals like this as pets.
loom at what’s happened to a the everglades because a few morons decided that their pet pythons were too much hassle to take care of and decided to secretly let them go in the wild.
non-native invasive species are a problem.
deadly non-native invasive species are a bigger problem.
f’ing morons. shaking my head at the rampant stupidity of people on this planet.
What part of the body is his car? Is it near the leg, arm, torso?
It is rare now days that the media will describe a prep s black.
They’re completing the sketch of the 2016 Darwin Award.
“Police described the cobra as youthful with a black hoodie and a distinctive circle on its back and a tan underbelly.
It’ll just blend in with all the others in Austin.
“Police described the cobra as black with a distinctive circle on its back...”
1) That’s the first suspect description using the word “black” in living memory.
2) Overheard at police headquarters: “No distinctive circle on either of these. The DA says, let’em go.”
“My cobra loves riding in the car. He sits right up on the seat and sticks his head out the window..”
