C-Span has just aired a replay of the Wednesday ceremony held by the US Congress to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the beginning of the Vietnam War. Congressional leaders and current members, the Secretary of Defense, and past members of Congress who had served in Vietnam spoke about the war, its significance in the history of the country, and the sacrifice of those who served as well as the debt of gratitude the country owes them to this day. When Boehner finally got around to presenting at the end of the program he announced that a lapel pin had bee created to honor all those who had been on active duty during the Vietnam era, from the late fifties through 1975. A number of veterans in the audience were presented with pins, but no information was given on where or how the pin could be obtained for those who served and would like to have one. the program was about an hour long......
I was at TSN in March 1964 and watched SecDef McNamara land
in Air Force One. I went back to my home unit and told my Bn Commander: “Sir, We’re going to war in RVN in short order.” And so it was.

I was flying over there in 1963. Believe me if I tell you the war had already started weather MacNamara or LBJ thought it had or not.
I was doing an internship at Walter Reed in March 1964 and by September knew I was going to the medical center on Okinawa when I was done at Reed - the buildup for something big was on its way....
