The ChiComs still operate 17 Ming’s which are a knockoff of Soviet Romeo class from the 1950s. The Taiwanese are even worse off operating 1950s US diesel electric subs as no other nation will sell them diesel electrics so as not to piss off the ChiComs.

Taiwan has only itself to blame for the mess it’s in. It could have easily acquired technology from the Dutch or the French in the 80s, when Taiwan’s level of indigenous tech was far ahead of both South Korea and Taiwan, both of which are now exporting subs.
