My first look at this rifle came a couple of years ago while we were filming segments for the Ruger Inside & Out television show at Gunsite. Shown to me with warnings of great secrecy, the switch-barrel version of Rugers SR-556 was said to have been in development for several years as the engineers and production folks at Ruger worked out the kinks in producing a gas piston, removable barrel rifle. The rifle I was shown then had two barrels, one in 5.56 and the other in .300 Blackout and we had a bit of fun shooting the .300 barrel with a suppressor attached. More recently, this April at FTW Ranch in Texas, Rugers Mark Gurney introduced the perfected SR-556TD (TD for takedown) to me and a small group of writers and now Ruger has announced the rifle to the shooting public.

Great product. Nice to have hanging next to your 10/22 takedown.
I have the 10/22 takedown and love it. Not sure I will get this as it is quite expensive.....piston driven. No doubt they will come out with a DGI version which is cheaper.
2k? Ouch.
I don’t get it! BFD my AR-15 broken down is four inch’s longer an a hell of a lot faster to bring into action. I know I don’t get the fancy pack but mine is cammo and better any way.
A solution in search of a problem. As has been noted, AR-15s are already “takedowns”. Quick change barrel to .300 blk is kind of nice, I guess. but uppers are so cheap now, why not just another 300 blk upper?
I (don’t) GOTTA HAVE ONE!
Truck gun.
True, I can takedown my AR-15, and re-assemble, and boom, zeroed.
I never quite understood the necessity for a “take-down” AR when any AR breaks down with two push pins.
Ruger does make some nice piston ARs, though.
The packaging target for cased take-down ARs seems to be briefcase-sized. To achieve that, the barrel and upper receiver have to separate. Yes, it’s a niche market rifle, but I’ll bet lots of peppers will give this Ruger a good close look.
