I see exactly the same thing. Even mathematics majors are generally weak.

My uncle says there are 3 kinds of parents he encounters.

1. the Absentee parent who couldn’t care less what their son or daughter does in college.

2. The angry parent who rages that their special snowflake failing his business ethics class may hinder snowflake’s ability to get the magic degree and become an instant kajillionaire regardless of whether they can do a job or not. (the worst kind)

3. The involved parent who doesn’t care if their son or daughter is upset about them contacting the professor because their education is more important than the feelings of junior. (the best kind)

My uncle is no fan of the H-1B program but says that few companies can compete without it. He’s friends with Quicken loans founder Dan Gilbert and points to the fact that Gilbert had 20,000 show up in Detroit for a job fair offering 12,000 jobs. He immediately disqualified half of them for being uneducated degree holders. He lost half of those who remained when they found that they would be working in downtown Detroit. The 7000 person deficit were made up by big bonuses to transfers from other parts of the country and H-1B workers.
