How Putin Ignited a Civil War in Ukraine
NEWSWEEK ^ | 4 Jul 15 | Alina Polyakova

The war in eastern Ukraine is a Kremlin-manufactured conflict. The arrival of "little green men" in Crimea in February 2014 transformed the conflict from a domestic altercation between citizens and their government to an international crisis.

Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly acknowledged in a government-sponsored documentary that he carefully planned and orchestrated the military takeover of the Crimean peninsula. No such admissions have been made about the war in the Donbas.

From the outbreak of fighting in the east, the official Kremlin narrative has framed the Ukrainian crisis as a civil war between the Ukrainian government and pro-Russian separatists. In reality, for the first six months of the conflict, from March to August 2014, the Ukrainian civil war was a myth concocted by Russian state-sponsored media, reiterated by Russian officials and then picked up by Western media outlets eager for objectivity and balance.

"the Ukrainian civil war was a myth concocted by Russian state-sponsored media"

The slaughter of ~50 people in Odessa on 2 May 2014 followed shortly after by the killing of ~20 more in Mariupol is a myth?

Propaganda is what you anti-America/NATO elements push in support of Putin’s military goals to undo what we accomplished at such great, cost during the Cold War.

Okay, she’s a beautiful women. She is working for democracy and transparency in Eastern Europe. I can see where you, one of the biggest Putin butt kissers, a real sycophant, a guy soooooo fond of the shirtless Putin would be put off by a hot lady who is smart and for self-government. I guess a former KGB thug is more your type.

Yup. Sarcasm...the purpose of which is not necessarily to change the mindset of its intended target. It just illustrates the targets foibles for others to see.

Have a nice day

What’s this with ginning up anti-Russian sentiment today? This is the third article on the subject.

And I’m not buying it. I’ve met someone from Luhansk, and the anti-Kiev feeling in the eastern provinces is indigenous and not from Moscow. The current government in Kiev was created by a hybrid popular-uprising/coup (popular among Ukranians in the region of Kiev) against an elected president whose election support came mainly from the east and the Crimea. Is Putin backing the rebels with thinly veiled use of the Russian military? Yes. Great powers tend to intervene in their neighbors affairs in their own national interests. But the notion that the resistance to the current regime in Kiev is Putin’s creation is one of these “narratives” the media and our current administration likes to create.

Actually you are wrong. Even most local ethnic russians from Luhansk and Donetsk do not want to fight.

The Russian armed forces colonel commanding eastern Ukraine’s secessionist militias can’t recruit enough local men as fighters…But to his surprise and disgust, he says in a video posted May 17, his fellow ethnic Russians in Donetsk are not rising up to join him in returning the region to its rightful place under Russian rule...But in a province of 4.5 million people, Girkin laments, he can’t find 1,000 volunteers to defend this “noble mission.”

Well then the fellow from Luhansk I know must be unusual. Of course only about 3% of Americans were enough of patriots to actually fight in our War of Independence, which was backed by the French under Louis XVI (no more a great friend of freedom than Putin, but my observation about Great Powers applies even further afield than their immediate neighbors).
