With the number of UC applicants at a new high, California residents faced tougher odds of gaining acceptance into next fall's freshman classes. A record number of students from other countries and states, meanwhile, received offers of admission..
About 60% of the 103,117 California applicants were offered a spot on at least one of UC's nine undergraduate campuses, according to university figures released Thursday. That appears to be a record low acceptance rate, down from about 63% of the 99,955 applicants last year, and about 79% in 1999, the oldest available systemwide figures.
However, Stephen Handel, UC associate vice president for undergraduate admissions, said that interest is so strong in the public university system that he expects the ranks of California freshmen will remain about the same as in this past school year, even though the 61,834 Californians accepted to UC were about 1,000 fewer than last year. Their ethnic composition continues to shift from whites to more Asians and Latinos.

Whatever happened to the concept that California Universities were designed to educate California residents and taxpayers?
Isn’t it sad? For twenty years Americans have moved to CA and one draw was great state schools that would be cheaper for residents. Now the state has spent our money on illegals and trains to nowhere, so they need to keep us out of the school’s we funded and get more bucks from out of state and foreign citizens. California truly hates our own middle class.
Many foreign students are from elite families in their own countries. They bring money and influence.
God I hate that I’m currently stuck having to work and pay massive amounts of tax to this lunatic state.
Truly humuliating...
I was talking with a guy that has a son going to a private college. He was talking with me and my daughter - telling her to be nice to dad (me) and go somewhere cheap.
“Yeah - if your last name isn’t something like Yakasuka it is REAL expensive.” (I’m guessing that was his last name - he’s Asian.) I’m not sure why Asians get the preferential treatment - other than I suppose to make the colleges more “diverse”.
(”Okay - we already have plenty of rich white kids - now we need some rich Asian kids for diversity.”)
Try leaving. You’ll have to convince the Franchise Tax Board that you have actually left the state. It’s not what they want to hear.
That concept was retired once it was discovered that California universities (like many other north american universities) exist to educate chinese citizens.
NJ is filled with Asian students; higher education is one of the last industries here, and since most Americans can’t afford it they bring anyone else in who can.
there’s a new phenomena happening in colleges now. wealthy chicoms are sending their kids here for school. these kids will of course return to china. meanwhile, they have lots of cash to grease the skids of the application process.
this is not good news for the country. instead of training as many US students at top schools as is possible, we are training our overseas competitors. it was happening back in the 80’s when i was in engineering school, but at least then we weren’t actually training the kids of communists with ties to a government that has nukes aimed at us.

there are all sorts of stories online (just use google) about how these kids show up with $250K ferraris or lamborghinis and they have lots of cash to throw around. they are the spoiled kids of the PLA elites.

“Try leaving. “
People spend a lifetime building connections. They create a comfortable social space and that space is most of their lives. The job and the taxes are only one aspect of that space. Now consider that the entire family is psychologically rooted. Moving is one of the three most traumatic things that can happen; death and loss of a job being the other two. Moving can cause divorces and is especially traumatic for children. So, it’s harder than you might imagine.
Huh!?
For the last 25 years Americans have been moving OUT of California.
Mexicans and Chinese have been moving IN to California.
What decade are you living in? The world you're talking about was the 50-60's.
Decided to stock up and shelter in place instead.... ;-)
It’s all about out of State tuition $$$ to keep the fascists Professors in 6 figure incomes and illegals on grants or at worst at in State tuition rates.
As to being tough on the kids, when she and her youngest finally got down to the brass tacks she exiled him to a place about 40 miles from my original first choice.
At least it seems to have been a good move for him.
I don't have to imagine. I did it. That's how I know about the problem with the Franchise Tax Board.
“God I hate that Im currently stuck having to work and pay massive amounts of tax to this lunatic state.”
I understand your frustration.
BUT you do have a choice. It’s not an easy choice, but we all have the option to go Galt. If materialism isn’t important to you, it can be done.
We escaped Mexifornia to a rural, conservative area that is less expensive. We are becoming self-sufficient while also opening 2 small businesses to provide income and to do jobs we enjoy. The best thing about being self-employed is we can put $21k each into our 401ks each year (we’re over 50) plus a percentage of our profits, thereby controlling our taxable income.
Feeding the fascist beast just encourages it.
