Greek debt crisis: In Athens, scavenging from bins has become a way to survive

Piled high with rubbish congealing in the summer heat, municipal dustbin R21 on Athens' Sofokleous Street does not look or smell like a treasure trove. But for Greece's growing army of dustbin scavengers, its deposits of rubbish from nearby stores and grocery shops make it a regular point of call. "Sometimes I'll find scrap metal that I can sell, although if I see something that looks reasonably safe to eat, I'll take it," said Nikos Polonos, 55, as he sifted through R21's contents on Tuesday morning. "Other times you might find paper, cans, and bottles that you can get money for if you take them back to the shops for recycling." • Greece crisis live: Latest news as Greeks submit audacious new two-year bail-out application but promise to default tonight One reason for R21's popularity is because it is just down the road from a church soup kitchen, where the drug-addicted, the poor and homeless queue up for meals three times daily.

I watched a video documentary last night on what to expect ....and interesting when they got to the part where people would leave the cities once they’d ransacked everything there.

When all was said and done the focus was all about keeping yourself as “invisible’ as possible. Til you reach the destination where you’re going.

It's my understanding that all these pensioners clamoring for money were the same ones who worked 28 hour weeks, retire at 58... fully on board with abortion so their’s no one to make the payments for their pensions anyway.

Her generation has pilfered that country for years...and here they are begging someone to keep taking care of them. I have a hard time feeling sorry for these people...it does seem they brought it on themselves. The same will eventually catch up to us.

IMO this was orchestrated to happen in order to get the people to vote yes to EU's Austerity....

Here they are fighting each other to get in line...quite a difference from the dancing duo's who issued themselves a soft lifestyle for so many years.

Yup. Maybe they should sell the Colosseum to Las Vegas where it can be reassembled into a casino. It’s probably worth a few euros.

They simply have no initiative to “develop” their country....it's been a playground for decades.

Now they are not a happy people

Beggar Su is the man to find for learning the art of being invisible in public and defending oneself. A few seconds in, watch for the man who appears from under the table. Apologies for the language (British influenced Hong Kong dubbers).

You got that right. If they can’t get delivery, they’ll starve because they’re clueless. Many of the younger crowd don’t know how to turn a stove on. As usual, I’m cooking at home and we’re having home shot venison for dinner along with from scratch gravy and beans and cucumbers picked fresh from the garden this morning.
