The European Union’s president called Thursday for a crackdown on migrants who are only looking for jobs as opposed to those fleeing war or persecution, as migrants keep arriving on Europe’s shores in ever-greater numbers. […]

“We need to contain illegal migration and this should be our priority,” EU President Donald Tusk told reporters at a summit of the bloc’s leaders in Brussels. “All those who are not legitimate asylum-seekers will have no guarantee that they will stay in Europe.” …

Just to clarify: Tusk is president of the European Council, which consists of the heads of state of the member states and the heads of the EU Commission. Herman van Rompuy held this post before Tusk. (Tony Blair was really bucking to be the first to hold the post, at one time.)

Had Scotland bailed out of the UK, the devolution talks would still be under way, there would have been a bunch of de facto legal tender, and without clear-cut plans for budgets, taxes, spending, and a clear picture of assets vs what they would owe to the UK, no EU membership -- but there would also have been no one guarding the front door. Thousands, probably tens of thousands, of refugees, including those from the country responsible for the Lockerbie bombing, would be flooding the formerly Scottish polity.
