I remember well the howling Bush got for nominating Harriet Miers. Thanks to all the republican uproar (Laura Ingraham being one screaming the loudest), Miers withdrew and we got Roberts.

Thanks...thanks a lot.W initially nominated Roberts to replace OConnor when she retired. When Renquist died, Bush withdrew Roberts nomination for Associate Justice and resubmitted it for Chief Justice. He simultaneously nominated Miers for Associate Justice. Who knows but that the vote would have been 7-2 had Miers been there instead of Alito . . .

No, Roberts was appointed first. We got Samuel Alito instead of Harriet Miers. And Alito has been the third most solid justice since (after Scalia and Thomas).
