WASHINGTON (AP) Investigators are blaming mistakes by IRS employees not a criminal conspiracy for the loss of thousands of emails related to the tax agency's tea party scandal.
IRS workers erased 422 computer backup tapes that "most likely" contained as many as 24,000 emails to and from former IRS official Lois Lerner, who has emerged as a central figure in congressional investigations, according to IRS's inspector general.
The workers erased the tapes a month after IRS officials discovered that an untold number of Lerner's emails were lost. The IG says the workers were unaware of a year-old directive not to destroy email backup tapes.

Erase backup tapes?????
What the heck does ‘backup’ mean?????
Oh, it means erase me!
Nixon’s secretary accidentally erased 18 minutes of audio tape.
Mistakes were made...
There is not a damn thing you and I can do about it. Members of Congress could, but they won’t. All these “investigations” they do is only to pacify the sheep. Those who work for the IRS know that nothing will be done to them also. If you do not believe that, watch their attitude and demeanor as they “testify”. If Issa was not part of the fix, Lois Learner would not have been allowed to make her speech and get up and walk out.
Anybody out there in electron-land ACTUALLY BELIEVE this bullshit???
...didn’t think so.
So let me see if I have this right. A person works for the IRS and part of their job involves recycling tapes. There are certain tapes that by directive (law), must be preserved for whatever reason. And the person that does the job isn’t informed?
Is that what their saying?
So I take it these are the emails the IRS refused to turn over to the investigating committee. They just needed some additional time to “accidently” delete them.
The corruption level of this government would make that of Mexico look pure and honest by comparison.
How come this never happens when they’re doing your audit?
Mistakenly my a$$!
I think they should identify the workers, drag them out on the street and execute them. It will be a lesson to others in the IRS that they should not make mistakes.
BTW, it is possible to retrieve the e-mails.
OOPSIE!
Boy are our faces red!!
Yet another reason not to have sympathy for the IRS... ever.
They are evil, corrupt to the core.
Also I would never work for them, even for a company that deals with the them, as I would be afraid for my very soul to be involved in that satanic organization.
The untold pain and suffering they have caused - the suicides, the lives and families destroyed - reads like a demons list.
I see this election as our last best hope. If we do not elect a true conservative, the march toward socialism/communism will be complete within a decade.
I am beside myself that millions in this country have no clue that their freedom is being stolen. One day, one day very soon, Americans will wake up to a very different America. One that by simply speaking your mind, you will be whisked away in the middle of the night, never to be heard of again.
Why not ask the Red Chinese for their copies?
No bias in reporting there. /sarc
How many hard drives was it that were “mistakenly” recycled (meaning melted down)?
Right?
I read a story about a decade ago of a man who battled the IRS for years. They took his business, home, bank accounts...basically ruined his life. He committed suicide under the pressure.
The IRS accused him of owing them $220,000 dollars. Some time after his death, further investigation by his family, the IRS finally admitted, he owed $22,000.
They drove the man to his death. Oopsies. My bad? Sorry bout your loss?
