LAS VEGAS (FOX5) - Speaking to reporters in Washington Tuesday, Sen. Harry Reid called on Nevada higher education officials to consider changing the University of Nevada, Las Vegas' mascot and sports nickname.
The statements came after a shooting in South Carolina that claimed nine lives sparked debate about displays of the Confederacy.
On the campus of UNLV Tuesday, it was difficult to find anyone who believes the mascot, Hey Reb!, should be changed.
What happened over there is a tragedy of course, but what's happening here on campus is what's happening on campus. Go Rebels, student Billy Watts said.
I don't think their mascot has anything to do with the tragedy that's going on in South Carolina or anything like that. People are taking this stuff to a new level it doesn't need to go to, student Amanda Spang said.
Tony Allen, with UNLV's Office of Media Relations, on Tuesday issued the following statement:
UNLV's current mascot, Hey Reb!, was created in 1982 by late local artist Mike Miller and was inspired by western trailblazers of the 1800s. It was intended to be reflective of western independence and spirit and has become one of the most beloved mascots in college athletics."

They want it changed to Cooperators With Tyrants. That’s the ticket.
The students there have bigger stones than many on FR.
Change it to the Fighting Mohammeds. Attendance at school events would skyrocket, just to see the mascot.
There is no Logic.
There is only The Revolution.
I think we should ban Dixie Cups, Dixieland, and Dixie Jazz. Maybe even Southern Fried Chicken.
Why the hell are we allowing these fruitcakes to do this?? Phones should be ringing off the hook in Washington and State capitals and e-mails should be suffocating their in-boxes.

I am dismayed to see so many "conservatives" jumping on this bandwagon. What a bunch of poltroons.
How about this one, Harry?
ha ha.
what a bunch of pansies.
all of them.
I think Nevada ought to re-consider Harry Reid as a Senator.
Remove his name from your list of Senators, since he really wasn’t one—just a fascist hack who pretended to be one.
Reid also wants to rename McCarran Field, the Las Vegas airport. Its namesake, Sen. Pat McCarran (D-Nev.) chaired the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee which unmasked a number of Soviet agents during the Truman years, and that accomplishment has landed him in the doghouse in these politically correct times.
“Attendance at school events would skyrocket, just to see the mascot.”
The new cheerleaders could be “The Bitches in Burquas!” Can’t you just picture their “moves.”
Wasn’t Harry Reid punched out by someone resembling the UNLV rebel mascot?
I suggest this:
It's the Coat of Arms of Mexico. UNLV can call themselves "the fighting eagles" or maybe the "snake eaters". They would be on the cutting edge of the new culture that is replacing the evil old American one. ¡Órale!
“I think Nevada ought to re-consider Harry Reid as a Senator.”
And maybe we could have his brother put out his other eye!

The left never misses an opportunity.
Suddenly it is obvious to me what is going on.
They are using the racial issue as a means to conceal the history of dissent and standing up for principle against the Federal government. The opposition to “rebel” imagery has nothing at all to do with race, except among the useful idiots who don’t understand the agenda.
Yes, and maybe they, UNR, and others will also remove Reid’s name from their buildings. I was on the UNR campus the other day and saw he has had them paste his name up on some buildings.
The news media used a single act by a single individual to take away our freedom of speech. If people dont see now that the media is the enemy and the problem I dont know when they will
