I hear ya. I got rid of a ‘57 gold plated Strat, a ‘60 Strat, and a ‘64 Strat. Hated to see them go, but they were all in weak technical condition. I bought a new-used Strat-Plus from about ‘97. Mechanically it devastates all my old ones. At 1/20th the value.

I’m selling my ‘65 sherwood green jazz bass to Norm next month. THat’ll be it.

Used to have an ES-335 TD and traded it for a very high powered mandolin. Never regretted it or looked back.

I have owned and played both 6 and 12 string acoustic archtops, with picks. I’ve owned all wood and a few of those Applause/Ovation style pieces too.
I have a respect for those, like the late Michael Hedges, who could play a harp guitar.

Michael Hedges : ‘because it’s there’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jN3439l4HR0

I have played a lute, a time or two.
In these days, with all the ‘other tunings’ now found to work, I have enjoyed a few folks’ work on dobros, or those who have used ‘bottleneck slides’.

Why to own? As for acoustics, anything from Classical guitar forward, you can make them do a lot, let yourself go as you feel out what strings and frets come to your hands, with the smiles, or tears that come along too, with or without sheet music.

I’ve never touched an electric guitar because that amplifier/foot pedal sound thing isn’t as real as it was, with me, the guitar, and a quiet room in my house. Maybe a zen thing, huh?

” not give you a heart attack should you bring it out to play somewhere”. LOL! Yup. Last Wednesday I went to an open jam (which I do too frequently) and took my ‘82 Fullerton, big head, hardtail, blackout, maple fingerboard Strat which is an 8 out of 10 and failed to make sure the upper strap lock was fully engaged. I took my hand off the neck and it hit the floor quicker than I could say WHAT THE....... Lucky for me it only knocked it out of tune and no damage otherwise. WHEW! First time in 54 years I have ever dropped a guitar.

Zen like no doubt. I play with others and that is when I get my most enjoyment. From the interaction and playing off each other. Of course it can be frustrating at times too.

Loved it. (Side note: Tats were noticeably missing, from this group.) How refreshing.

And if it was a Gibson, you’d be pricing out neck repairs right now. Right?

Lpl! Yup. I have a buddy here that does amazing Gibson fixes. Glad I don’t need his service this time.

I used a stick on pickup for my Spanish Classic for years. Sounded good through a good amp. Don’t play for anyone but myself anymore, so I can’t even find that pickup. I think I gave it away a few years ago.

I wish I still had my 3/4 Gibson Melody Maker from the 60’s, it’s worth some money now.

Thanks for the link,”You can hit him in the crotch with a banjo too”

“Sleepy Man Banjo Boys is a group of very talented young men and Earl Scruggs was, in my opinion, simply the best banjo picker ever. Steve Martin is very good too.

Strats rule.

I have two, and a Japanese plexi strat, and a custom built one.

Bass player here. Bass guitar isn’t always a chick magnet (doesn’t matter, I’m in a great relationship) but it DOES get them booties shakin’!

dear rktman,

I hear ya!

Try it with a ‘drumming circle’ ... that can be fun, crazy, a challenge.

Did do the Saturday night amateur ‘y’all come’ thing. That was a unique moment. I had my 15 seconds, before i found out about YouTube!
