Swedish society is founded on 'lagom'. Meaning not too much and not too little, it is a word that most other languages do not have. You are not allowed to be too rich or too poor, nor too flamboyant or too boring you should be like everyone else and not stand out. Japan has a proverb which is very similar.
"The nail that sticks out, gets hammered down."

I thought this problem was throughout Western Europe, where employess were basically all unionized (via government-mandated job protections) and had employment for life. This was described as the root of high unemployment and despair among younger people - few job openings as mediocre employees had to be kept on paired with reluctance by companies to make additional life-long employment commitments to young workers.
