Three Jasper County election commissioners who were notified in May they were not being reappointed have been informed by state Sen. Clementa Pinckney that their removal was never a formal decision by the countys legislative delegation.
Pinckney, D-Jasper County, says they are still members of the commission.
On May 26, delegation chairman Bill Herbkersman sent letters to Rev. Donald Sheftall, Patricia Walls and Lillian King stating that their services were no longer needed because of background checks by the governors office.
We have been informed by the Governors office that due to the circumstances and or credit reported, you have not been appointed/re-appointed to the Jasper County elections commission, the letter said. You are not to conduct any Elections Commission business either officially or unofficially.
The letter said they can resubmit applications.

On June 3, the Jasper County Sun Times requested under the Freedom of Information Act the background check documents for Sheftall, Walls and King. Herbkersman said he received the request and is working to send the documents.
Herbkersman said the letter he sent the commissioners had basis.
The elections commission is an important commission, so if there is a valid reason on why someone shouldnt be on the commission, then I think that sort of speaks for itself, Herbkersman said.
The fact is that its nothing personal. Its our charge as the delegation to do whats right for all the people in Jasper County.
