There are two verbs in Spanish for "to be": ser and estar.
Ser is for permanent, intrinsic characteristics: Eres hombre? (Are you male?); Eres inteligente? (Are you smart?).
Estar is for non-instrinsic or temporary, changeable states: Estás alegre? (Are you happy?); Estás em Chicago? (Are you in Chicago?).
¿Homo estás? first of all uses the word "Homo," which I believe is currently offensive (a slur) to LGBT folks. Second, the phrase employs the verb estar, indicating a temporary or changeable state of being, as in, "Are you -- at this very moment -- a homo?" This of course flies in the face of the idea that homosexuality is an intrinsic state you are born into, i.e., not a choice.
*Everything* is cracking up on the Left: You can "self-identify" as a woman (Bruce Gender), a black (Rachel Dolezal), and now gay to get a burrito! God help us, I think we're near the end.
Great tagline
Thanks so much for the explanation.
“¿Homo estás? first of all uses the word “Homo,” which I believe is currently offensive (a slur)...”
Yeah, I guess asking “Eres maricon?” wouldn’t serve their cause very well.
;^)
God help us, I think we're near the end.
Actually, I hope you're right. I've absolutely HAD IT with the idiocy that is happening in this country. Children are in control, and with the permanent damage 0Bola and the Dims have done and the Repubikans acting like Dims and rubber stamping further destruction, and open debauchery is celebrated, we have permanently LOST this country. I'm okay if this is The End.
