This is what conservatives do, it seems to me. Whoever is playing the tune conservatives like, they follow.

And usually there are quite a few pipers that all go in different directions thus splitting the herd.

This time around, I can't even keep count of all the pipers running helter skelter each with his own portion of the vote following.

This is how conservatives are going to lose again.

The left will coalesce behind their candidate, and conservatives will be squabbling among themselves about who is playing the best tune on the flute.

True. Of possible interest is the number of candidates declaring for President. Compare today’s candidate numbers with the number of candidates for the 1856 and 1860 election cycles. Do the number of candidates reflect deep divisions in the electorate as the number of candidates did in the earlier elections?
