I think her family thought this loose cannon was getting looser by the day. My guess is they decided to speak out before something tragic — or at least incredibly weird — happened.

I agree with you-I wouldn’t want the kind of backlash that would cause for my family, either-better to get the truth out there before something worse happens, since the woman is obviously a lunatic...
