A Kenucky polie officer shot a drunk man dead after the man attacked the officer with a flagpole.
A Kentucky police officer shot and killed a man who attacked him with a flagpole.
The local police chief said his officer was justified in using deadly force against the attacker.
NBC News reported:
A police officer who killed a flagpole-wielding man in Louisville, Kentucky, appeared justified in using deadly force, Louisville Metro Police Chief Steve Conrad said Sunday.
“The officer believed his life was being threatened,” Conrad said at a news conference, adding that the shooting which was captured in dramatic surveillance video at a nearby grocery store was still being investigated and that the officer, 10-year veteran patrol Officer Nathan Blanford, wasn’t treated for any injuries and hadn’t yet been interviewed by investigators.
Blanford was dispatched to the Old Louisville neighborhood about 2 p.m. ET after a 911 caller reported witnessing an assault. A man was seen grabbing and throwing a woman’s purse and cellphone on the street, Conrad said. Then, the man punched her.
In the surveillance video, Blanford is seen pulling up at an intersection next to a man walking on the sidewalk. Blanford slowly approaches the man, whom police refused to identify Sunday night. After what appears to be a brief argument, the man quickly walks away from the officer and out of view of the security camera.
UPDATE:
Behold! The leftist narrative emerging on Twitter:
I am not so sure this officer had time to react. He may have grabbed the mace but the thug was coming at him to quickly.
If given time to think it through, he may have just maced or stunned him. He probably would have called for backup if he knew what was going to happen.
The man that was attacking him could have possibly taken his gun. What would have been the outcome then?
Let’s pretend the cop is a private citizen carrying.
What would the FR reaction be?
Don't bring a flagpole to a gun fight.
If there were more fathers in the African American community they might tell their children to obey the five basic rules of interacting with law enforcement:
- Don't lie to the police.
- Don't run from the police.
- Don't (EVER) fight with the police.
- Don't consent to any searches (ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE).
- Other than to identify yourself don't talk to the police.
The picture with the raised pole looks like he was going to
chuck it like a spear.
Because they don't want to wind up on another Rodney King video?
“Why can’t the police just crack belligerent, violent drunks in the head like they used to?”
The video was edited to remove part of the attack before the shooting.
The site has a newscast video that is complete and shows the attack to be much more vicious but I can’t capture the link.
Good shoot if a civilian did it. Did the officer have a taser????
Here is how it was handled here in Reno. Keep you eye on the woman in the gray sweater. She has an extendable baton in her hand.

My reaction: Assault with a metal pole like that can be deadly. If a citizen is assaulted this way, justified shooting.
What others will say is on their consciences.
‘Suicide by cop’.
The look in her face says “uh oh, the jig is up”.
Yep, here’s a clue. Don’t meanace me with a metal pole and you won’t risk getting shot!
“The picture with the raised pole looks like he was going to
chuck it like a spear.”
It’s a short video. Why did GWP and NBC both edit (two different edits) the video removing portions of the attack?
GWP has the full video but when I get the link it goes back to the edited version.
In the decades following WWII, when America was full of WWII vets, Korea vets, Vietnam vets, and manly men, cops had size requirements, and the idea of just shooting everyone, did not exist, cops had to fight.
Females can't fight, so today, cop procedure is different.
That flag pole rod is far more substantial than the metal twig shown on Twitter. What a farce. That cop did the right thing.
Was he singing "You're a Grand Old Flag" at the same time?
