Charge stems from auto makers failure to recall vehicles equipped with defective ignition switch
The U.S. Justice Department is weighing charging General Motors Co. with criminal wire fraud stemming from the auto makers failure to recall millions of vehicles equipped with a defective ignition switch, said people familiar with the matter.
Federal prosecutors in New York are focusing on the charge after determining GM likely made misleading statements and concealed information about the faulty switch, now linked to more than 100 deaths, the people said. They are hoping to reach a settlement with the company by the end of summer or early fall, though the timing could slip, they said.
Prosecutors also could explore other kinds of possible criminal wrongdoing in the GM case, the people familiar with the matter said. They havent made any final decisions on which charges to bring, if any, they said.
We are cooperating fully with all requests from the [Justice Department], as we have from the beginning, a GM spokesman said in a statement.
In the GM probe, Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara is building on an unprecedented settlement with Toyota Motor Corp. in March of last year.

Gee, must not have made the right campaign donations
1 mil to Bill & Hill and presto...no more charges
Future ‘Obama Foundation’ shake-down .... already starting.
2 big 2 fail?
Hmm. I seem to remember that a while back the administration really liked GM.
ignition switch?
wire fraud?
Get it ? Get it!?
Uhmmm....I thought corporations weren’t people, so how they find an entity of instrument guilty of a crime....
Yep, and even if GM is fined over $1B they still have over $10B of taxpayer dollars from the bailout.
Good one.
What’s funnier is it appears they are shaking down the corporation, to get back a smattering of the monies we gave the unions.
They’ll simply pass the costs of this litigation to the consumer. So, it’s not like the corporation has to “feel” remorse or contrition.
Which is fine by me.
These jackasses should have reorg’d the first time and the goonions should have had their bene’s reduced.
Would have nade them more competitive if they had...
They really should outlaw “ignition switches” anyway.
Ignition Switched kill.
We have got to have ignition switch free zones, particularly around schools....
They can still open plants in Mexico and Canada!
Based on what I’ve heard about the actual “repair” they are going to do,it won’t solve any problems,so they may be going through this again at a later date. Why don’t they wise up & fire a few certain people & hire a few good techs to take their place? Save them money in the long run,I think.
“Wire fraud?” Does that have something to do with the electric conduits to the air bags?
They’re thinking about charging Obama with wire fraud?
They have fired 15 low to mid level people over this but not until 2014. The higher ups claim they knew nothing but that’s about as believable as an 0bama speech.
In 2006 an engineer (Digeorgio?) re-engineered the switch and the manufacturer and GM didn’t even change the part number.
No recalls were made for the cars already on the road. GM sent letters to all dealers of the cars involved and told them to only change out the switch if an owner complained.
Their rears are hanging out a mile and they know it, that’s why they’re being so cooperative now but they’re gonna get nailed.
I didn’t know the government could sue itself.
