To build on Roger’s Ford example, there was a trade tarriff war that is exactly applicable today. The US wanted to protect domestic small truck producers, so we tarriffed imported Toyota’s, Nissans, etc. The Asian countries responded by taxing our agricultural exports, specifically chickens.
It was called the Chicken tax and 30 years later Ford decided to close their Ranger plant in MN and move production to Australia. Now, the product isn’t even available in the US market.
