Our Transgender Community
The repeal of DADT allowed Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual service members to openly serve for the first time in US history. However, despite this monumental step, transgender are still banned from openly serving in our
Armed Forces. Despite this prohibition, transgender people serve at the double the rate
of the general population, though they must keep their gender identity a secret or risk being discharged.
The United States is not among the 18 countries where transgender people are allowed to serve openly in the military. Promised review of policy at the Pentagon could change that in the near future.
