American Pharoah became the first horse in over three decades Saturday to earn the Triple Crown, placing 1st in the Belmont Stakes after winning the Preakness and the Kentucky Derby earlier in the season.

In one of the sporting world's rarest feats, the bay colt with the unusually short tail defeated seven rivals in the grueling 1 1/2-mile race, covering the distance in 2:26.65 to end the longest stretch without a Triple Crown champion in history.

American Pharoah is the 12th horse and first since Affirmed in 1978 to win three races on different tracks at varying distances over a five-week span. He won the Kentucky Derby by one length on May 2 and then romped to a seven-length victory in the rainy Preakness two weeks later.

No, the last triple crown winner in MLB was Miguel Cabrera in 2012. Carl Yastrzemski won in 1967. The last NL Triple Crown Winner was Joseph “Ducky” Medwick of the St. Louis Cardinals in 1937. Rogers Hornsby (1922 and 1925)and Ted Williams (1942 and 1947) are the only players to win a Triple Crown twice.

I guess you are right. I thought that he had just put a reserve on his horse.

You never know. They had a cluster of triple crown winners in the 70’s. Maybe they will have a few close together again.

It was a very exciting race. To see him fly out in front of all the others was so thrilling. Kudos to his wonderful jockey as well. Not every day one gets to see a Triple Crown!

This horse now stands to command 6 to 7 million a year in stud fees for many years to come, according to ESPN. Yeah, great ROI!

[T]he last triple crown winner in MLB was Miguel Cabrera in 2012.

Yaz's TC had an asterisk (he tied for the AL lead in HRs), but he was never treated the way Frick treated Maris in 1961. Frank Robinson in 1966 was the last undisputed MLB TC winner, leading outright in all three categories.

Would AP's TC have an asterisk if he was in a DH for the win in the Belmont?
