It was the cult of Dionysus/Bacchus.
There was a yearly “festival”/drunken orgy, where men who wanted to be “priests” ( they didn’t believe that they were women” ), drunk on doped wine castrated themselves and yes, did wear women’s clothing afterwards...if they survived the self castration.
