If he disliked the flute so much, why did he write The Magic Flute?

He disliked writing for the flute. Schickanäder's libretto for "The Magic Flute" was so good he couldn't resist it, especially considering that the librettist was a Masonic lodge brother.

I saw an English language production of it in Tacoma 25 years ago, and the jokes still worked.
