THE CHAMBER MUSIC OF LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN

String Quintet in C, Op.29

The traditional string quintet is a string quartet (2 violins, viola and cello) with an extra viola. This gives it a deeper sonority. It was Mozart who invented the string quintet, and his last four quintets are absolute masterpieces. Beethoven was openly competing with Mozart here, and he knew that while his competition had been dead for a decade, his quintet would have to bear comparison with Mozart’s, especially his Quintet in C Major.

Beethoven had waited a bit too long to give publisher Hoffmeister the quintet he had promised, so the publisher took the Opus 20 septet and had his house arrangers publish a quintet version of the piece. Lou went ballistic. He went to the competing publishing firm of Breitkopf & Härtel and told the world that they would be publishing the promised quintet.

The opening movement is marked “allegro moderato” and in the first eight bars the melody changes key three times. An A minor transition leads to the second subject in the remote key of A Major. The exposition repeats. Development begins with taking the first subject apart and then turns agitated. The instruments follow each other down the scale and then recap with cute little accents from the violin, which are repeated on the cello. The second subject appears in the correct key of C Major. The coda is majestic, then refined, then decisive.

The slow movement is marked “adagio molto espressivo” in F Major and looks back to Mozart and Haydn. Just when you think the movement is going to end, he turns violent for a bit, but then returns to the opening material for a serene ending

The scherzo is marked “allegro” in 3/4 and C Major. It’s based on a little three-note rhythmic figure that is almost a musical hiccup.

The finale in C Major is marked “presto,’ and it caries a nickname: “The Storm.” Twice in the storm, Lou stops the action cold for an episode in 3/4 marked “andante con moto e scherzoso” which is a mock-serious minuet – and I do mean mock! It’s incongruous for the piece as a whole, which makes it such a funny moment. The end is rousing.

Beethoven: String Quintet in C, Op. 29

Next week it’s some more violin sonatas.
