The Senate voted overwhelmingly to advance the USA Freedom Act Sunday evening, but too late to prevent Sen. Rand Paul from being able to force a short-term expiration of Patriot Act surveillance authorities at midnight.
The overwhelming vote Sunday came after Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., threw in the towel on advancing any short-term extensions of the Patriot Act authorities under the continuing objections of Paul, the fellow Kentuckian he has endorsed for the presidency.
The Senate voted 77-17, far above the 60-vote threshold to advance the bill. Several more steps are required, however, before a vote on final passage, which wouldnt happen until Tuesday at 2 a.m. at the earliest in the face of maximum obstruction from Paul. And its starting to look like it could take more days beyond that.
Paul acknowledged the bill will ultimately pass as he began an hourlong speech Sunday night.
The Patriot Act will expire tonight. It will only be temporary, he acknowledged. But he said that forcing the expiration was still worth it, and believed most Americans agreed with him.

“Which means for all of them who voted for the extension that an another issue in a primary exists against them.”
Given that Ted Cruz seems to support an extension, does that mean he’ll get a primary opponent?
Of course its going to pass. Junior started his speech by saying it would. He’s just trying to throw a spanner in the works. Good on him, but in the end the quisling caucus will pass it.
When push comes to shove, they’re all bought and paid for. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t be allowed on the ballot.
I tell you the way the GOP-E elite leadership in the Senate is frothing in their depends, I can’t help but appreciate Rand Paul just a bit more, today.
Now that doesn’t mean it’s permanent or he can’t blow it on something again, of course, but this moment, yeah, he’s doing real good.
I haven’t had much use for junior. Credit where credit is due, though. Sometimes people just wake up one morning with a clue. We’ll see how long he keeps it.
I think we all have an asterisk or stated caveat when we have occasion to praise Rand Paul. today he did good. Let’s hope it’s not blown in the next week.
Maybe with a little feat of fate, McInsane will dream about this tonight and stroke out.
Cornyn has turned into a great little beltway Toadie...
Nice to contemplate. I’d rather he have that happen during his 2016 concession speech so the bitter gall taste of losing is fresh in his mouth.
I concede I may not be as nice as you are in your scenario. :)
