The Senate voted overwhelmingly to advance the USA Freedom Act Sunday evening, but too late to prevent Sen. Rand Paul from being able to force a short-term expiration of Patriot Act surveillance authorities at midnight.
The overwhelming vote Sunday came after Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., threw in the towel on advancing any short-term extensions of the Patriot Act authorities under the continuing objections of Paul, the fellow Kentuckian he has endorsed for the presidency.
The Senate voted 77-17, far above the 60-vote threshold to advance the bill. Several more steps are required, however, before a vote on final passage, which wouldnt happen until Tuesday at 2 a.m. at the earliest in the face of maximum obstruction from Paul. And its starting to look like it could take more days beyond that.
Paul acknowledged the bill will ultimately pass as he began an hourlong speech Sunday night.
The Patriot Act will expire tonight. It will only be temporary, he acknowledged. But he said that forcing the expiration was still worth it, and believed most Americans agreed with him.

McCain has a hissy fit if his oatmeal is not stirred correctly.
Jimbo, we are watching the call-ins on CSPAN2. They have independent lines for R,D & I.
NO ONE of any stripe is for the continuation of the Patriot Act. Everyone supports what Paul has done.
From the article:
McConnells announcement came after several tense exchanges on the floor with Paul, including a testy back-and-forth with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who repeatedly accused Paul of not knowing Senate rules for when he is allowed to speak. At one point, McCain even objected to letting Paul talk for five minutes, before relenting.
He would be the worst candidate we could put forward, the GOPs 2008 nominee later told reporters about Pauls presidential aspirations”
I have to say, that is one fantastic endorsement for junior. Congratulations.
That's why I voted for Cruz in the first place, to get up Cornyn's nose.

Thank you, Senator Paul. Even if only symbolic, your efforts in this area are greatly appreciated.
It was a smart move by Paul. I won’t vote for him, but it was a smart move.
Which homegrown terrorists would those be, John?
“It was a smart move by Paul. I wont vote for him, but it was a smart move.”
I’m in the same boat, but it was very instructive to watch and listen. And to see that 90% of the worthless Senators weren’t there! If most of them were on a bus that went over a cliff and into a lake, no one would miss them.
You know, the ones they FLEW in, under the radar, and rolled out the red-carpets for...There were two from Boston recently...Russia gave the warning call and the U.S. govt (including the dip-shits that voted for the extension) turned a blind eye that allowed 4 Citizen deaths (yet, nobody in govt has been removed from office, jailed or even FINED) and numerous wounded. Can’t forget the Martial Law laid down and Citizens threatened (point a gun at the cops/soldier and see what happens).
Yep, even given actionable intelligence they fail.
I hope John Cornyn’s staff monitors this site.
I will never cast another vote for John Cornyn.
McLame has a hissy fit every morning just to keep in practice.
With all the tracking and spying the fedgov is doing,
they can’t even stop the telemarketers from violating fedlaw,
so why should I think they could stop a terrorist?
Dumb-asses; the whole lot of them.
Which means for all of them who voted for the extension that an another issue in a primary exists against them.
Hear that Johnny? Kelli Ward and perhaps Mr. Gosar will be coming for you since you don't even vaguely represent Arizona.
Even if the choice is him or Hillary?
Whatever.
Actually there have been some, gone to join ISIS, tried to blow up the "Draw Mo Hamhead Cartoons" contest, gamed by FBI to blow up building etc.
Let us rewind: Remember when Snowden revealed this stuff?
Lots of Freepers called us out to engage our Senators and Congressmen to remove this outrage.
I smiled to myself: How naive. Just because it was revealed, IN NO WAY MEANT they would stop.
And they didn't. And they won't. We are a fascist police state, and I'm not sure we ever were anything but.
And so long as junior is tugging on Mc Cain’s nose hairs, he’s doing good by me.
Good to see you posting, Johnny.
